The League Cup final in 2022 will be replayed if Chelsea plays Liverpool. That year, Liverpool defeated the other team on penalties in both of their FA Cup final meetings.
Following a disorganized and unimpressive first 20 months in leadership, Chelsea’s lavish American ownership has a date at Wembley Stadium as the London team looks to win its first trophy under the new management.
In the English League Cup semifinals on Tuesday, Chelsea defeated second-tier Middlesbrough 6-1 to overcome a 1-0 first-leg deficit against a squad aiming to become the first non-Premier League team to make it to the competition’s championship game since 2013.
Before Chelsea added further goals in the first half through Enzo Fernandez, Axel Disasi, and Cole Palmer, an own goal in the fifteenth minute knotted the game on aggregate.
Palmer and Noni Madueke’s goals after the break increased Middlesbrough’s suffering as Chelsea won 6-2 overall, securing a final match against either Liverpool or Fulham on February 25. Liverpool will go into the second leg in London on Wednesday with a 2-1 lead.

Chelsea was purchased by a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital in May 2022 after Roman Abramovich sold the team. With over $1 billion spent on players in the first three full transfer windows, their expenditure has been unprecedented but inconsistent, and Mauricio Pochettino is the regime’s third permanent manager. After finishing a miserable 12th in the previous season, the squad is wallowing in ninth position in the Premier League.
Though Chelsea still seems far behind the best teams in England, it may finally be starting to come together.
“As you can see, we’re a young team that needs to develop,” Pochettino stated. For our younger gamers, this kind of game is a positive experience. Gradually, we are assembling a strong staff.
“We need time to put everything in place, but we have the talent.” It is a fresh endeavor.
Chelsea was still the clear favorite to proceed to the final, even after its unexpected setback at Riverside Stadium two weeks ago. The early goals — four in the first 42 minutes — all but ruined Middlesbrough’s chances.
At times, the visiting squad, led by former Manchester United and England midfielder Michael Carrick, was their own worst adversary. For example, during the first goal, Jonny Howson’s attempt to tackle Armando Broja in the area resulted in the ball going into his own net.
After Broja assisted on a cross from Disasi, who later scored by converting a cross from Raheem Sterling in the 36th, Fernandez swept in a close-range finish for 2-0.
Palmer, who has been a revelation since leaving Manchester City in August, scored the game’s opening goal in the 42nd minute after disposing of Daniel Barlaser, a defender for Boro, on the edge of the visitors’ box.
In the 77th, he made it 5-0, and four minutes later, Madueke, the replacement, completed the victory.
Middlesbrough’s 88th-minute consolation was secured by Morgan Rogers.
The best — and maybe only — opportunity Chelsea has to win any hardware this season is through the domestic tournaments.
Although they have a difficult fourth-round match against Aston Villa on Friday, Pochettino’s club is still in the FA Cup.
