Panicky Bayern Munich played in Freiburg to increase Bayer Leverkusen's chances of winning the Bundesliga (2 March)
In four away games since January, Bayern Munich has already lost both in the Bundesliga and the Champions League.
Friday’s match between Bayern Munich and Freiburg ended in a 2-2 tie. Lucas Hoeler’s equalizer in the 87th minute gave leaders Bayer Leverkusen the opportunity to surge ahead by ten points. After an outstanding start from Freiburg captain Christian Guenter, Mathys Tel’s 35th-minute stunner appeared to have sealed the three points for Bayern munich. Then, Jamal Musiala’s outstanding solo effort appeared to have sealed the victory.
Hoeler, though, had other ideas. He dribbled a chipped volley through a crowded Bayern munich penalty area and past an ineffective Manuel Neuer. Following a thirty-minute drill, Thomas Tuchel, the manager of Bayern Munich, chastised his players for their “body language and lack of bite,” stating, “We played completely without structure, had no discipline, and weren’t in our positions.”
According to Tuchel, his squad was “panicky” and “we did things that we’ve never spoken about and that we’ve never trained for.”
Musiala said he was “frustrated” to DAZN.
“I’ve always believed that we must win because we hate losing here at Bayern. “Our goals are to win titles and the Bundesliga,” he declared.
In four games since January, Bayern has already lost away from home in the Bundesliga and the Champions League. With a 1-0 disadvantage from the first leg in Rome, Tuchel’s team faces Lazio at home on Tuesday in the Champions League round of 16. With that loss, they fear an early exit.
“Just instinct”
Xabi Alonso’s unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen can pull ten points clear of the Bavarians in their derby match against bottom-of-the-table Cologne on Sunday as they aim to win the Bundesliga for the first time ever.
Vincenzo Grifo of Freiburg told DAZN, “We played a good game”. “It’s clear that you have to suffer against Bayern.”
Twelve minutes later, Guenter gave the home team the lead with a twisting shot from outside the box that found its way into the bottom right corner of the goal. It was the team’s only outside-the-box effort of the season and the captain of Freiburg’s first.
On his second league start of the season, Tel reacted with a long-range curling goal, feeling that Guenter shouldn’t have the entire highlight reel to himself. With fifteen minutes remaining, despite Bayern controlling possession but failing to produce clear opportunities, Musiala dribbled past three Freiburg players and put a low attempt into the right corner of the goal.
Musiala described the objective as “just instinct.” “You try and you dribble and see what you can create.”
Even though they were ahead, Bayern lost steam and closed the gap to hold onto their narrow lead. With three minutes remaining in regular time, Hoeler outwitted several Bayern defenders before chipping a volley past Neuer and into the goal.
The draw marred Max Eberl’s first day as sports director of Bayern Munich, despite his statement earlier this week that the squad would still push Leverkusen for the crown. With only five points separating seventh and fifteenth place in the crowded Bundesliga rankings, Freiburg ends the evening in ninth place thanks to the point.
