Jannik Sinner defeated Novak Djokovic to advance to the Australian Open 2024 championship match. Djokovic had not lost at Melbourne Park in 33 games prior to this, dating back to 2018. Still, he was unable to carry on his winning run. He narrowly missed out on winning an 11th title and a record-tying 25th Grand Slam crown. It was Djokovic’s first Australian Open semifinal loss.
Sinner, who defeated Novak Djokovic in the opening two sets 6-2 and 6-2, seemed to have an easier time winning the first two sets. The Serbian superstar, as usual, would not give up and the third set was a difficult one to crack. Eventually, Djokovic prevailed 7–6, and play went on. The decisive set went to Sinner 6-3.
Sinner made Australian Open finals history as the first Italian player. In their last four games together, he has triumphed three times. Sinner laughed and responded, “I don’t know,” when asked what made his game unique. Question him!”
The elimination of Carlos Alcaraz, the second seed, preceded Novak Djokovic’s defeat. Alexander Zverev had earlier defeated Alcaraz in the quarterfinals. Sinner is ranked fourth in the competition, while Djokovic, who is well-known for his outstanding performances in Melbourne, is ranked first. Novak’s lack of a Covid vaccine prevented him from competing in the Australian Open in 2022.
In the competition, Jannik Sinner has yet to lose a set. The 22-year-old Italian player will now try to win his maiden Grand Slam championship. But this isn’t the first time he’s overcome Djokovic. He had previously defeated Novak Djokovic at the Davis Cup and in the group stage of the ATP Finals.
“I’m glad I get to compete against the world’s best player in one of the biggest tournaments.” It’s going to be difficult, but he has won here before, according to Reuters.”All I can promise is that I will battle and give it everything I have for every ball. We’ll wait and see what happens.”
Alexander Zverev vs Daniil Medvedev
Later on in the day, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev will compete in the other semi-final. Despite reaching his ninth major semifinal, Medvedev had only one Grand Slam victory, which came at the US Open in 2021.
Medvedev made it to the final in Melbourne in 2021 and 2022, demonstrating his past good achievements there. Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic were his respective opponents. This time, Medvedev wanted to win and move up to the number-two slot in the global rankings.
