Despite Yashasvi Jaiswal's game-winning double-century, Rohit Sharma holds back from congratulating him.
When questioned about Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma remained reserved.
As everyone goes crazy over Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma hasn’t said much about the young Indian player. As he was asked to talk about the young Indian, the captain of India kept to his earlier advice to be cautious after Jaiswal scored a double century in the last Test match at Visakhapatnam. Not just among former Indian cricket players, but among former celebrities everywhere, Jaiswal has caused a stir. Jaiswal is rapidly sweeping the globe, having been compared to the great Don Bradman, having similarities to Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar, and being called a batter with “no weakness.”
Even while it might make Indian cricketers take note, Rohit thinks Jaiswal needs to keep his composure and not get too carried away. Ultimately, it is not often that a 22-year-old batsman scores 500 runs in three Test matches and thrashes double hundreds in consecutive Tests. Rohit Sharma understands how crucial it is to keep extraneous distractions from overwhelming one’s thoughts, especially if one is a player who is just starting out in the international cricket league.
“I’ve talked about him a lot. People outside the locker room have undoubtedly also been discussing him. I’d rather not talk about him too much and be cool about him. After India’s massive 434-run victory against England in Rajkot, Rohit was asked the “final question” of the post-match presentation ceremony. He responded with poise. “He’s started his career on a high.”
Jaiswal’s astounding figures
Jaiswal was not short of records falling into his lap. During his knock of 214 not out, he smoked 12 sixes, tying Wasim Akram for the record for most sixes struck in an innings. Even with two games remaining, he has already amassed the most runs by a batter in a series with 22 after hitting 10 more in the first two Tests. India smashed 28 sixes against England, the most in a Test match ever, thanks in part to Jaiswal’s 12 shots over the fence. Absurd!
Another astounding bit of information is that out of all three of Jaiswal’s century, his lowest score is 171. Better than that. If that’s not enough, he is the only other Indian batsman to achieve three double hundreds in a single Test series, following Vinoo Mankad and Virat Kohli, and the third to smash two tons in back-to-back Tests, after Kamble and Kohli. Heave hooray!
Rohit Sharma had previously had anxiety when it came to blowing Jaiswal’s trumpet. After the second Test, Rohit Sharma called Jaiswal a “good player” and gave him advice on maintaining his modesty. “Seems like a really skilled player who is aware of his limitations. Still a long way to go, naturally. It was a knock of extraordinary quality. “I hope he maintains his humility; he has a lot to offer the team,” he had stated.
